Students are learning all about balance in our first science unit. Balancing something in a stable position means that it can stay in the same position, without being held, even if you give it a little push.
To develop our understanding of balance, students have had the opportunity to try to balance a variety of objects on their finger or on a craft (popsicle) stick. One core understanding that the students have developed is that in order to balance, some items will need counterweights. Those counterweights must be placed below the balance point in order for them to help the item balance.
Using their understandings, students have been able to balance crawfish on their noses, arches on their side, triangles on a vertex, and even a sharpened pencil on its tip! What else can they balance around the house?
