If You Give a 2nd Grader a Crayon

In reading we are currently working on cause and effect.  To reinforce the idea, we read the If You Give a _______ a __________ books by Laura Numeroff.

I then challenged the kiddos to write their OWN cause and effect story, titled "If You Give a 2nd Grader a Crayon."  Check out a few of our FABULOUS stories below!!

If You Give a 2nd Grader a Crayon
By:  Kate

If you give a 2nd grader a crayon, he'll want a piece of paper.
When you give him a  piece of paper, he'll draw a bat.
And a bat will remind him of a haunted house so he'll want you to take him to a haunted house.
When he's at the haunted house, he'll scream so loud he loses his voice.
When he's at the doctor's to get back his voice back, it'll remind him of the beach.
So he'll ask to go to the beach.
At the beach he'll make a sandcastle.
Then he'll go in it and pretend he's eating.
That'll make him hungry so he'll want to go home and eat.
When he's done eating he'll want a piece of paper.
And chances are, the second grader will want a crayon to go with it.

If You Give a 2nd Grader a Crayon
By:  Katie

If you give a 2nd grader a crayon, he'll ask for a piece of paper.
When you give him the paper, he'll draw on the paper.
When he gets done with the picture then he will ask for some tape.
He'll use the tape to make a paper airplane.
When he thinks of the paper airplane he wants to ride on a airplane.
When you ride the airplane, he'll see a beach so he'll ask to go to the beach.
When he plays at the beach he'll feel weak so he'll ask to go to the gym.
He'll bring up that he's teh strongest person in the world and he bragged so much he will end up in jail.
Then he won't like it so he'll do a jail break and it works and he becomes a master mind villain.  Then he'll notice that being a villain is bad so then he'll end up back at his home.
Then he'll probably ask for a crayon.

If You Give a 2nd Grader a Crayon
By:  I'm a really great writer who didn't put my name on my paper

If you give a 2nd grader a crayon he'll want a piece of paper to go with it.
That will remind him of the nationwide coloring contest.
He'll want you to enter him.
When you enter him he'll want a leprechaun to color.
When you get the leprechaun he will want to go look for four leaf clovers.
That will remind him of a green crayon and sure enough
he will ask for a crayon and chances are he will want some paper.

If You Give a 2nd Grader a Crayon
By: Kitt

If you give a 2nd grader a crayon she'll want a paper to go with it.
When you give her a paper, she'll want to draw some pictures.
The pictures she drew will remind her of the park.
When you get tot the park she'll see some boats.
And when she sees some boats she'll want you to row the boat.
When you row the boat, she'll see some fish.
Once she saw the fish it will remind her of the pet store and she would like a goldfish.
Once she sees the goldfish she'll want to draw the goldfish.
Ohhh...she left her crayons at home
and chances are you'll have to give her a crayon.

If You Give a 2nd Grader a Crayon
By:  Ryan

If you give a 2nd grader a crayon, he will probably ask for a paper to go with it.
That 2nd grader will probably draw him on that paper.
After that paper's filled, he'll probably want to draw on the walls.
After those walls are filled, he'll probably ask for another paper and marker.
When he gets that paper and marker he'll draw a poster for a free concert at Ralston Arena tonight at 11:55.
He'll probably hang up his poster by some posts.
After he does that he'll probably ask to go to the concert.
That's if you give a 2nd grader a crayon.

I am so excited that I'm M.V.P.  I had so much fun making my All About Me poster wth my aunt and sharing my five show and tells.  For show and tell I brought Elsa and Anna dolls,  an American Girl doll, a white board, and magnatiles. I'm also having a lot of fun at school too.  My favorite part of the day at school  would probably be: art, math, or music.Thank you for taking your time to read my blog.

Our M.V.P. Blake

On Winter Break I went to Brita, Iowa.  We went to see our cousins and to have a good time.  When we got there we started to play a game with our little cousin.  The game was hide and seek.  We'd have to hide and our little cousin would find us and tag us.  Then we would have to be it once he tagged us.
After that we sat down and ate lunch.  We had ham, corn, salad, rolls, and apple pie for dessert.  During lunch my cousin started dancing around the lunch table.  He fell down and he got back up and started doing it again.  I thought it was silly and I laughed at him.

When it was time to leave I felt a little sad to leave all of my little cousins alone.  I can't wait until I go back and visit them again.

My best present for Christmas was spending time with my family and seeing my Aunt that lives in Witchita.  It was fun because we got really fun presents.  I got a gold xbox remote for my xbox.  I felt happy because that is what I wanted.  At my grandma's we do a secret santa present exchange.  We all pick a paper out of a hat.  The paper says a name and we have to buy a present for that person.  My Aunt Sheena got my name.  She got me a remote control monster truck.  I got my Grandma Mia's name.  I got her a tie dyed Nebraska blanket.

We all ate at the big table and talked about our favorite present.  I said that I liked my gold remote.  My grandma said that she liked her tie dyed blanket better than her other presents.  My grandpa said that he liked the cologne my grandma gave him.  My mom said she liked that Jax got a lot of presents and that he got a dog with buttons on it.  You press the buttons and it sings or talks.  My mom's boyfriend got Nebraska jammies and he said he liked those a lot.

Then we all had dessert.  We could choose from pumpkin pie, pineapple pie or cheesecake.  I really like spending time with my family.

OUR MVP Ryan

Yesterday I got to go to a bowling party.  I drove in Mrs. Oak's car to the bowling party.  When we got there, I had to get some bowling shoes on.  Then we walked over to find a ball.  We took the ball to a lane.  We typed in our names.  Olivia, Jackson, and Cheyenne bowled with me.  I hit a lot of the pins down.  I was excited and gave Mrs. Oak's a high five everytime I knocked them down.

After a little while Mrs. Oaks brought me some pizza and pop.  I had pepperoni pizza and Dr. Pepper.  The pizza was tasty.  Finally it was time to go home.  My mom came and picked me up in a little bit.  Bowling was really awesome and I hope I get to go again!

OUR MVP Damen

This year was my second year playing in the Cornhusker State Games for hockey.  Our team name was the Little Lancers and I was the team goalie.  When our team received our jerseys the parents set up the locker room like a professional NHL locker room, it was awesome.  On our way out to play our first game in the  tournament all the parents lined up to give us high fives and tell us good luck.  It was a very hard tournament but our team had so much fun.  Our team even had its own professional photograph with us at all times, he is also the Omaha Lancers photographer.  We all can’t wait to play in the tournament again next summer.

We Remember

Today is Patriot's Day, a day that we use to remember the events of 9/11 and those who lost their lives that day.  We took took a break from our learning at  9:11 a.m. to have a moment of silence and then followed that with The Star Spangled Banner.  What a great opportunity to recognize and remember all those that work daily to keep our country safe and free.

We also had the opportunity to show our remembrance by creating a pictorial representation of September 11th, shared by a wonderful teacher at http://primaryparadise.blogspot.com/2012/09/free-september-11th-craftivity.html The picture shows the Twin Towers, Pentagon, and a badge representing the first responders who were there to help, with the background of our flag.  It is an amazing tribute to all, and a fantastic way to remember and celebrate what makes us proud to be an American!

We hope you enjoy our tribute.

American Symbols Reader's Theater

Our second grade class has been learning about America, with a focus on the symbols that represent our country and what our rights and responsibilities are as citizens.  As part of our learning this week we completed reader's theaters. Reader's theater is an awesome tool that incorporates the content along with speaking and reading fluently.  Take a look at our performances!

Our MVP Katie

We ate in our classroom because we got all of Joe's body parts.  Joe is our potato head.  We get body parts because we are being quiet at the carpet, are being respectful, or get a compliment from another teacher.  If you were cold lunch you got to leave your lunch in the classroom.  If you were hot lunch you got to go down to the lunchroom to get your lunch.  Then we came back into the room so that we could eat our lunches.  I was happy that we got to do that.  It was really fun to do it.

Our Favorite Things

Today we will work together to write our first class blog post that will tell you all about what we've been working on in writing...

We all brought blue bags that had three things that we wanted to write about. (Damen)  We wrote about the first favorite thing we pulled out. (Katie)  Then we all learned how to write paragraphs. (Kate)  Our class wrote five paragraphs all about ourselves. (Blake)  All of the essays had the same endings. (Addison) It took us three days to finish it! (Kitt) After we were done writing, we decorated the front of our essay with a self portrait. (Cameron)  Finally we got to share our essays with the class. (Jasmyne)

Ryan is sharing his story.

John is reading his essay.

Damen is writing his essay.

Kitt is writing about her favorite things.

Hudson is sharing the story to the class.

Boo!  Can you guess who is who by our self portraits?

Building Our Reading Stamina

A large part of our daily literacy routine is our Daily 5 Rotations.  Daily 5 consists of 5 (in our room 6) different literacy stations that each child can choose to complete daily.  They complete 2 stations each day, with their third rotation being either a reading group or a reading response assignment from reading group.    The 6 stations they may choose are:

Read to Self - students silently read books that they have self selected

Read to Someone - students read with a partner from a selection of poems, magazines, and books

Listen to Reading - students utilize Tag Readers or Leapsters to listen to fluent reading and/or play educational literacy games

Work on Writing - students write independently.  Often times they will have a writing activity to complete but after that they can choose to write anything they'd like.

Word Work - students practice their sight words and phonics skills by choosing from a large selection of word working games including - Boggle, stamping words, rainbow writing words, word wheels, making words, and roll and spell words

Ipads - students may choose to read/listen to books from several sites or play literacy based games

We have learned expectations for several of our Daily 5 centers and will continue to work on doing them correctly throughout this week.  Reading groups will start slowly this week and then in full force next Tuesday.
